Baton Rouge woman arrested for ‘huffing’ cleaning duster in school parking lot

A 21-year-old woman was arrested after she was found huffing cleaning duster in the parking lot at a local school.

A deputy with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Adelaide Tanner on Wednesday, Oct. 23 shortly before 11:00 p.m. According to the affidavit, she was found in her vehicle near a school in the Westminster-Pine Park neighborhood.

When the deputy approached the vehicle, he allegedly witnessed Tanner “slumped over and twitching repeatedly.” The deputy also claims she was holding Office Depot brand cleaning duster in her hand. The cleaning duster contains a mixture of chemicals including Ethanol, Denatonium Benzoate, and Tetrafluoroethane.

“[Tanner] admitted that she was ‘huffing’ and stated that she did not know that it was illegal,” the report noted. “Upon a search of the vehicle [the deputy] located four more empty cans of the same duster. [Tanner] stated that two cans were from the previous night.”

Tanner was arrested and charged with Abuse of Toxic Vapors. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

Abuse of Toxic Vapors is a misdemeanor offense. The penalty includes a fine of no less than $25, no more than $100, and can include a prison sentence of no more than 90 days.
