Fort Pierce woman arrested after ‘huffing’ in PSL parking lot

PORT ST. LUCIE — Police on Thursday arrested a Fort Pierce woman who admitted “huffing” aerosol and retrieved 57 cans of aerosol from her vehicle, according to police and a report released Friday.

Laurel K. Smith, 27, faces a misdemeanor dangerous inhalation of a harmful chemical substance charge after an officer found her in a vehicle at a CVS Pharmacy in the 2800 block of Southwest Port St. Lucie Boulevard.

An investigator found vomit “all over” her vehicle’s interior and also on the front of her shirt. Aerosol cans also were spread throughout the vehicle.

Smith, of the 6300 block of Chaska Street, initially said the cans were for cleaning her car and denied using them for “huffing.”

She later admitted “huffing” a single aerosol can in the parking lot and passing out for about 30 minutes.

Smith said she’d been “huffing” for two years, saying she gets a quick high before passing out for 30 to 45 minutes.

“I asked her if she thought she had a problem and she stated she did have a problem and was attending AA meetings for the past three months, but she is not addicted to inhalants and could quit at anytime,” the report states.

Police found 57 aerosol cans in her vehicle and also three receipts indicating aerosol purchases from three locations in the previous six hours.
